What to do in Esquel, Patagonia Argentina

Main Activities

FISHING: all the courses and mirrors of water of the National Park Los Alerces offer a diversity of species that allow to the lovers of the fly-fishing to practice the "Catch & Release" with rainbow trout, brown trout, landlocked salmon and pacific salmon (that enters to the area through the rivers Corcovado and Futaleufú). One of the more famous places is the mouth of the river Frei well-known internationally because of the landlocked salmon. In the month of December when beginning the fishing season, is carried out the Party of the Trout that includes the Opening championship that is carried out in different places of the National Park Los Alerces.
SKI: Ski Center ‘La Hoya’. It has 150 capable hectares for the practice of the alpine, Nordic ski and of voyage. It has 8 elevation means with a transport capacity of 4,000 persons/hour, a hostel and refuge for 80 people. In this place, in the month of September, is carried out the National Party of the Ski whose main event is the pentathlon that summarizes the sport activities of the area.
The Indigenist Museum and of Natural Sciences of the western of Chubut, located in the old station of the railroad and inaugurated in 1978. It has archaeological pieces of the prehispanic and search-Hispanic culture of the area, embalmed autochthonous birds, fossil remains, petrified wood, snails and vegetable remains with more than 15,000,000 of years.
Crossing the bridge on the stream Esquel you consent to a path that takes to the summit of the hill La Cruz being able to stop in several miradors that offer panoramics on the city.
To the National Park Los Alerces: Leaving from Esquel or Trevelín you have to take the route #71 that takes to Villa Futalaufquen located to the south of the homonymous lake. This place is the access to the National Park Los Alerces and headquarters of it Intendency. It has hotels, cabins, camping site, and it is the starting point of numerous trips in automobile, in crafts by rivers and lakes, trekking, cavalcades or mountain bike. One of the unlosable walks is the organized lacustrine trip to the Millennial Forest of Larches. It leaves of the port Limonar in the lake Futalaufquen, then it navigates the river Arrayán, the lakes Green and Menéndez, until the forest of millennial larches where one stands out in particular of more than 2,600 years of age, 60 meters high and a diameter bigger than 2 meters.
From Villa Futalauquen toward the north and always by the provincial route #71 you arrive to the different sectionals of the national park.
To 30 kilometers it is the sectional Arrayanes with hostel and camping area on the riverbank of the river Arrayanes. From there you can consent to: lagoon Escondida, lagoon Alta, hill Riscoso, hill ‘Alto el Petiso’ and to the lakes Menéndez, Hito and Rivadavia.
To 32 kilometers it is the sectional Lago Verde with camping site, market and sanitariums.
To 42 kilometers it is the sectional Rivadavia beside the lake of the same name with camping site, sanitariums and closed eating place. From this place it leaves a trip embarked by the lake Cholila and then by the river Tigre until the nascent of some glaciers.

To Nahuel Pan:
village located to 20 kilometers from Esquel by the route #259, where a group of Mapuches is devoted to the breeding of sheep cattle and to make crafts in rustic looms. Every year in the month of March to the foot of the hill Nahuel Pan carries out a "Camaruco", a meeting to request to God for a good year. This act of faith is alternated with typical dances to the rhythm of instruments like the Cultrúm, the Trutuca and the Pifilca being able to last up to 5 days.
